The literal meaning of Haridwar represents the 'gates leading to God' and no wonder this is one of the most sacred places for the Hindus. Located on the banks of the river Ganga, Haridwar is dotted with numerous temples. Devotees visit this place to offer prayers to the God as well as to pay the last tributes to ones' ancestors. Could there have been a better way to begin your spiritual tour of the country other than this place? Besides visiting the ancient temples of the city, make it a point to be present on the Ganga shores especially during the evenings when the elaborate 'Aarti' (worship) takes place. There are several yoga centers housed in and around the city from where you could learn the practice of this ancient Indian art. Not only does yoga help to prolong your life, it also helps you to control and knock out number of diseases through the postures (asanas) and self discipline (niyama).
