WHAT IS A CORONAVIRUS?

Coronaviruses are the huge family of viruses that can cause small illnesses to complicated illnesses ranging from the common cold to critical illness such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). They are transmitted from animals to humans called zoonotic. In humans, they are spread through airborne droplets of fluids coming from infected individuals and it is an easily communicable disease that can spread to a wide area in a small amount of time and cause death in humans. If we see in-depth about the inner cause investigations prove that SARS-CoV was spread from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from camels to humans. Various types of coronaviruses are circulating among animals that have not yet spread to humans.

It was identified in 1937 from an infected virus in birds that are capable of devastating poultry stocks. Then in 1960 scientists found coronavirus in humans in the common cold. The OC 43 and 229E are the two human coronavirus responsible for common colds. The name comes from their crown-like shapes and term corona means crown. These infections mostly occur during winter and it affects the respiratory tract.

It is the longest genome of an RNA-based virus – a single strand of nucleic acid about 26,000 to 32,000 bases long. There are four genera in the coronavirus family. They are alpha which affects only mammals, beta affects only mammals, gamma infects birds and delta which infects both mammals and birds.

SYMPTOMS

Common signs of infection are fever, cough, breathing difficulties, pneumonia, severe acute syndrome, kidney failure, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, fever, exacerbated asthma and even death.

COVID-19

It was first reported in Wuhan, located in china. It was isolated from stallholders at the china seafood market in Wuhan. Where this market sells mammals and wild animals, which were the host of coronavirus. The animals initially transmitted this virus to humans with a mortality rate of 1 percent. As of now the search for animal origin is ongoing. In 2019, the CDC begins to monitor the outbreak of a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which causes a respiratory illness known as COVID-19. More than 1 lakh people have contracted the virus in China and the rate is improving now. Around the world including many states and countries, it is spreading.

The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency regarding coronavirus break down. These infected strains are diagnosed in several US residents. It is likely to spread to more people and COVID-19 is spread around 25 countries. Several groups of people have a high risk of coronavirus like young children, people aged more than 65 and pregnant women. WHO has recognized 2500 cases in 27 countries, resulting in nearly 860 deaths.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:
