Sikkim (formerly the Kingdom of Sikkim) -the smallest state of India, located in the Himalayas between Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet (China) at the foot of the sacred Himalayan mountain of Kanchenjunga. The name is translated from Sanskrit as the Land of Mountain Ranges (Shikkhim). Joined India in 1975, before that it was under its protectorate. The spiritual master of Sikkim is the Great Teacher Guru Rinpoche, who in the 9th century brought Buddhism into the country, traveling from India to Tibet with the mission of spiritual enlightenment. Sikkim always experienced the strongest Tibetan influence and was considered a place of spiritual energy and mystery, where the Tibetan sages sought their Teachers and retired to explore the world. Today, it is Sikkim who preserves the Tibetan knowledge brought here after the Chinese invasion. "The Land of Heavenly Steps" called Sikky the great Roerich, who lived here and carefully studied this country. In Sikkim, the Central Asian expedition of the Roerichs (1924 - 1928) began and ended, and in 1948 - 1955. in Kalimpong lived the family of Elena Ivanovna and Yuri Nikolaevich Roerich. Elena Ivanovna in Kalimpong was cremated.
